Use a good dose of something like PB blaster on the ball joints a few days ahead of the job, repeat every day for a couple of days, and they will come off easily, even if you have to use an extender (I also use a section of metal fencing, the top rail stuff, slipped over the handle of the ratchet.) Also - sometimes the threads of the axle nut will be staked, so it takes a bit to get it started.
