Thanks for all your help. This forum has been a huge help to me. I completed the project today and ....knock on wood..... it seems to have gone well. I used a heavy 6PT 32mm impact socket and a 6ft long piece of gas pipe to extend my old 1/2" breaker bar and held my breath while the pipe bowed quite a bit before the nut broke loose. I kept expecting the breaker bar to snap and dump me on my keyster in the snow..... Man it was cold in Bean Town today.
THe ball joint bolts even broke loose without having to resort to the torch. I put that bit of luck down to the fact that the car was in California for most of its life, only making the trip to Boston about 5 yrs ago according to the records that came with it. I replaced both ball joints and the lower shock bushings while I was at it. I slathered everything in anti-seize in case I ever need to get in there again. I also saved the old axle ( to rebuild at my leisure) since I understand the e-europarts one that I put in today cannot be repaired if anything fails.
