I think you are getting what you paid for. The Advanced "economy" battery is what you buy if you need a battery to sell a car, or you don't plan in keeping your car for more than a year.
I too, have experienced horrible battery life in Saabs, but I can't really blame the battery manufacturer. I bought an Optima red battery for my 93 convertible, lasted 2 years. This car also went through a bunch of charging problems, had a new ground installed, then a year later a new voltage regulator. I also would use this battery for rescue missions of my other vehicles.
As far as the heat shield goes, I do not have one on my 90 SPG. When I bought the car, previous owner did not even have the J bolts to hold the battery down, just a bungee cord wrapped around the battery. A corner of the "economy" battery had started to melt. The battery is not too close to the turbo, the exhaust pipe is too close. I wrapped the exhust pipe next to the battery with ceramic fiber tape, which insulates up to 2300º.

I think the best solution to your problem is simply to buy a better battery, and KEEP THE RECEIPT HANDY! I'm not sure about how an Optima fits with a turbo, but my NEXT battery will be a top of the line Die Hard, with the dated reciept kept handy in the glove box. It will be Sears' problem next time.
