Alternator ground questions Posted by Notnoel [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I am putting in a Beck Arnely rebuilt rplacement and have a couple of questions regarding connecting up the ground to the block. On my last alternator there were two grounds, a short (4 inch) one to the block, and a two foot ground connected to the fuel rail. Both were connected to 1/2 inch long extensions of the long screws that hold the two halves of the alternator together.
The problem is, the new alternator does not have long extensions on those screws to connect the wires to. I've already put it back in the car - I think I recall seeing a typical electrical connector on the backside. Is that typically the ground and will it be obviously labelled as such? I don't want to connect a hot wire to the block and fry the alternator or anything else for that matter.
This also leads me to my next question. If the previous installation was solely grounded using those extension screws, how could it have been properly grounded? I mean, those screws hold two halves of an aluminum casing and aluminum is a lousy conductor. Was the last mechanic competent? I had it done when I was to busy at work to do the repair myself and if this was sloppy work, I certainly don't want to take it back to him again.
Thanks in advance.
