Hey Zig,
It looks to me like those white fittings are jumpers to take the place of where bulbs are fitted in other markets. I don't know which Saabs got the temperature warning light, but I believe there was an EXH light required in Japan to warn of excessive exhaust temperatures. The EXH light was re-used in the US to light up every 30,000 miles to remind us to replace our oxygen sensors. The blue printed circuit sheet was the same part for worldwide instrument clusters. The only difference was in which slots had bulbs and which had jumpers installed.
The backlight bulbs are the two along the top with flat bases, not square ones. I've thought of wiring up the high-temp warning light on my '88. I have an extra switch controlling the engine cooling fan. One of these days, I'll wire up that light to the cooling fan to make sure I don't leave it on.
