is that there are plenty of unused connectors on each different version of the instrument panel. Every car has the wiring film for all the features, but some markets did not get them. That way, at the factory, all they had to do was put in different bulbs and jumpers and warning light screens for different markets. Even beyond that, there could be connectors on the back of the panel for bench testing when the part was brand new just to see if certain functions worked. Some connections go to other things in different places. For example, when I removed the huge clocks from my Volvo 240 fleet (instruments also by VDO) and relocated the clock to the side panel of the dashboard and put a much more useful tachometer next to the speedometer, there was a power plug for the new clock on the back of the tachometer which had to be wired up, otherwise the clock would not work. The tachometer itself simply dropped into place using the existing wiring and contacts. For a Saab example, 1988ish and later 900s with electronic injection sometimes used the signal from the cruise control pickup on the back of the speedometer for more than one use. Sure, it went to the cruise control unit, but it also went to the fuel injection computer.
So my guess is that the connector is used to feed power or instrument light power (dimmed) or tach signal or something else to an accessory somewhere away from the instruments.
