I am in the process of upgrading the stereo in my 87 Saab 900T. I have about 12 years of experience in the audio industry and was a former Bose research scientist.
I have finally landed on what I believe is the best audio setup for Classic Saab 900s without doing goofy things like drilling new holes in doors. If you are like me and prefer to keep the classic look of your beloved saab while adding tight Bass and crips highs I have some recommendations. I am also willing to help you put together a first rate system for your C900, but that will cost you! And I don't have very much time at the moment. I might try to put together a 'kit' if there was enough interest.
One shame is you can't get the Nakamichi CD500 anymore...but I have one ;) The Nak is a natural fit for the C900 because you can choose green lighting (the saab color), and you can turn the display to black when you do not want to be distracted. It doesn't have annoying flashing lights but it sounds like a dream! One problem with this unit in the past is getting CDs stuck. It has inputs for MP3 player ect. It is a gorgeously understated unit and with a volume knob! (well rotary encoder)...but alas very hard to come by now. Nakamichi went into bankruptcy. Therefore a good head unit is something you might struggle with.
BRADIKO'S RECOMMENDED SPEAKER DRIVERS FOR SAAB C900s
FRONT:
(1) Focal TN52 tweeter: (these fit beautifully in the front speaker grill with a little hole drilling nice black mesh grill)
(2) Audax 100CO 4" carbon fiber mid-bass: These fit into the front speaker grill but you have to cut away a little bit of yellow foam on the passenger's side and wrestle on the drivers side where it bumps into the speedo.
REAR:
(1) ETON ER4 ribbon tweeter: For many this is overkill and can be replaced with B&G magnaplanar tweeter for a fraction of the price. Fit under rear speaker grills.
(2) ETON 7-360 7" bass driver: low distortion mounted on the rear deck. Support brackets must be added to the deck underside for some support.
CROSSOVERS:
I have some crossover designs that are getting there for this setup but they aren't finalized, I am still playing with them. If you want to use digital amps all the way around I recommend making active RC crossovers.
Get in touch if you would be interested in the plans or kit or want some help making your Saab sound ridiculously good without making it look ridiculous. NOTE: I don't use subwoofers in any design so if you want to go 'BOOM BOOM' as you ride down the street you will have to look elsewhere.
Nice Sound!
