And has a drainhole that would make it leak, well under the passenger side. A close inspection of the cooling system may reveal the true problem. As with any leak,it might originate somewhere else and find its way to the drivers side. Might be a leaking waterpump housing, cracked nipple from your expansions tank, etc. One particularly tough to find leak is on the throttle body where the hoses get soft and develop pinholes. Running with the cap off for 40 miles will cause a boil over as it is a pressurized system. I would prefer to carry 5 gallons of water and if it does start to leak or overheat, just stop, let it cool down, and top off. Or do the smart thing and have it towed.
