You have to pull the axels before you take out the engine. Be sure that you loosen the large nuts at the end of the axles BEFORE you lift the car. Once the car is off the ground, you'll never get them off. Since you'll be taking the axels out, you can disassemble most of the suspension while you're there. Then just leave the car on jack stands. Also be sure that you use the Saab special tool or make spacers from blocks of wood to support the upper a-arms so they dont come down from the force of the springs and crush the frame where they come through the opening on the inner fender.
You have to take out the engine before you can remove the upper a-arms if you plan on doing anything with them. Obviously, be sure you put them back in before putting the engine back.
Most important; don't make the mistake of not having EVERYTHING you need to complete the job before you start. Many a project car has been taken to the salvage yard for no other reason than lack of planning and loss of interest because the restorer was unprepared and the job languished.
Best of luck, hope all goes well. :-)
