alignment woes! Posted by nicknick [Email] ![]() ![]() |
had the tyres balanced the other day, had them rotate while they were there. well, the car was then pulling wildly to the right. i had, the day before, driven it 450 miles and it appeared to be good. i noticed the front right was alittle extra worn, hence the rotation. took it in for an alignment today, guy tells me that the machine called for shims to be removed that weren't even there, so possibly the car had been crashed at some time. fair enough.
well, driving home, still had to hold the wheel to the left to drive straight, so i pulled it into the shop to check out bushes, etc.
first thing i see is that the front inner/upper bushing on rhs was toast. no problem, had one around, slapped that in. drove it, at least it didn't pull so hard to the right upon accelleration anymore.
decided to put a straight edge on the wheels to see how the general toe-in was. well, all i can say is, it was just terrible! with the steering wheel straight ahead, the left wheel was toe-out a fraction, and the right wheel was way toe-out. cranked the rod-end out 2 1/2 turns on the right, 3/4 turns on the left. now it pretty much is perfect, i actually had a fraction too much toe-in (would twitch on/off ice), so wound 1/4 turn back in on both, now it drives great. they had put 50lbs in all 4 tyres, as well, for some reason. i cannot check camber/castor but will go to a different shop for that.
long story short, the manager gave me my money back, the employee tried laughing at me (but the machine uses lazers!), and i won't say which large chain this was as they are franchised, and i have had good luck with their free puncture repairs, etc.
ok, rant over... thanks for listening!
