Carl,
If the left front tire is securely on the ground, the car is in gear and (only) the right front tire is raised clear of the ground AND the entire drivetrain is intact (no stripped splines, broken shafts, missing components) then when the right tire is spun the engine (crankshaft) has to turn so perhaps you have a damaged drivetrain component. Have you driven this car since you acquired it? It's essential that one axle be held still (by having it's tire on the ground for instance) when the other is rotated.
Anyway, addressing your original question; It sounds like at best you have a very worn timing chain and guides (and probably sprockets) and maybe more seriously a significant disparity of compression readings between cylinders which will cause poor engine performance and possibly the noise you're hearing. That funky compression could be attributed to bad piston sealing, bad valve sealing, a really, really bad head gasket or any combination of those things. With proper routine maintenance these engines don't tend to suffer from serious ring, piston or cylinder wear (and it seems that you aren't sure about the cars maintenance history) but maintenance or not head gaskets eventually blow out. There are a number of reasons for valves to not close fully. Perform both a wet and dry compression test and if the wet test doesn't bring the numbers up you should pull the head and expect to do some valve work. Take a close look at the head gasket too (even though you'll be replacing it). If the wet test brings the compression numbers way up on the bad cylinders then the pistons aren't sealing in their bores and you have a bigger task in front of you. Good luck
