Hey folks,
Looking for some advise. I am restoring my 1988 SPG and have the engine
(96k) torn down to the block. This engine is from my parts car that has 96k and has always, according to original owner, had oil changes 3500-5000 miles using Mobil 1 since new.
Question is, should I replace crank bearings, main bearings and rings while it is on the engine stand? Is it a waste as there was not burning oil or smoke? Unfortunately I did not do a compression test before tear down but it drove great.
I have talked to several people, including several techs whom state that the bottom ends rarely have ring problems. BUT since you are there maybe do it.
Let me know what you folks think.
Thanks,
VWSAAB
Note: see my gallery under restoration/engine.
