The play could be in the ball/socket joint at the power steering rack end of the tyre-rod. You'll have to pull the dust boot back to observe the socket movement of the joint. Check also the movement of the rack pinion and rack movement. As you know, the rack should do some movement with each movement of the pinion. Observe the tyre-rod outer end for the same looseness in movement. With all the angles of movement the steering has to move through, it doesn't take much to add an inch of play to the system. Especially when the wheel is turned to full left and full right. If your still using the old universal joint in the steering shaft, sometimes they can be re-greased with a small syringe. Then again, the refurbished power-steering rack could just be a bad one! Rack and pinion must move together with-out play to be a good refurbished job. Good Luck!
