I held out for a long, long time. I believed (and still do) that the Saab-Clarion setups were very good for their time. The 1992 setup being the best. Their biggest problems were: a) mostly crappy speakers, save for the Convertible and ii) they were in a C900, also save for the Convertible...
But, not being able to get any Clarion or Saab Clarion CD player or changer that didn't skip a whole lot, and the fact that I had an iPod, I broke down about two years ago and installed an Alpine head unit *($199 from Crutchfield) in my 1990 900 base. This head unit has an optional ($29) iPod cable, and plugs seamlessly into the car.
I know, it doesn't look "stock", but my little 900 has seen a whole lot of miles, and is in anything but concours condition. And the seamless integration was well worth the change.
And now, more and more aftermarket companies are making fully integrated iPod head units, and some of them don't look like "Tokyo at night"...
The Alpine can search on the iPod, by playlist, artist, album and song, shuffles, plays podcasts, audiobooks, etc.
Right now, my setup is:
Alpine Head unit with Alpine's $29 iPod cable;
Front Speakers: OEM replacements (Picked up at STCC in Trollhättan last June) Fed by the head unit (at present);
Rear Speakers: Boston Acoustics 6.5" two way speakers mounted in the rear seat side panels (this is a 3-door), fed by an almost 20-year old Crutchfield 50+50 amplifier under the back seat;
Kenwood self-contained subwoofer, 6" with passive radiator, stuck under the driver seat.
The rear speaker location, to me, is critical. Way back on the hatch panel (or even those 4x10s!) is bad from so many perspectives. Mounting the 6.5" woofers in the side panels, and the separate tweeters on the armrests gives a wonderful car-filling sound, particularly if you rest your head against the headrest. This is similar to where they are on a Classic Convertible.
Long ago I gave up trying to get "theater" sound in a C900. Now, I work towards "Headphone" sound...
This summer, I plan to upgrade the front speakers with their own separate amp...
