This is a textbook copy of what my '88 was doing way back when she was still an automatic. When parents first got the car, they took it to a dealer who changed the governor (after putting it in upside down the first time) and the fluid and adjusted the bands (or so they said) but the problem persisted. So, for the next 57,000 miles, we'd get the car up to 60 clicks with the shifter in "2," take our foot off the gas, shift into "D," accompanied by a thud and a gearchange. Any throttle pressure over about one-eighth throttle would throw the car back into second. Despite being forced to drive at such light throttle, the car still sucked gas (22 MPG is sucking to me) and would lose a drag race to a lawn mower.
At around 154k, on the first really cold day of the year, the car decided to stop selecting any gears until the fluid got really, really hot, and then the familiar thud-into-reverse came back. I tried flushing the fluid out three times in three days, and each time, the car would shift normally for about half an hour, then go back to its usual act. I really didn't want to throw a rust-free car (in New York no less!) away and get rid of a perfectly fine body, engine, driveshafts, brakes, interior, and the rest of the car.
I'd had enough.
The car is now a five-speed, gets 29 MPG in cold weather (34ish in the summer), can get out of its own way (8 valve non-turbo, yes), gets 460-500 miles from a tank of gas, and you can hear yourself think on the expressway. I like to think that five years ago in a slightly-heated garage north of Rochester (to the tune of $150 net expense) I put a life back into my car. That was 65k ago. Just the gas savings paid for itself in five months back when it was a buck and a half a gallon. Nowadays, it's probably closer to three months.
I also agree with mileage estimates. Back in '04 (way back when there were 900s in the junkyard) there were five of them there.
'87 S automatic: 154k (all readings in this post are in miles, sorry, eh?)
'88 T automatic: 151k
'89 automatic: 157k
'91 automatic: 183k and a stack of maintenance records
'85 turbo 5 speed: 254k and lots of rust
None of these cars had any impact damage. I'll leave the conclusions to you.
