In my 9000CD Turbo I had a similar thing happen from what you described. I had done some minor stuff to it and had disconnected the air intake to the throttle body. I "thought" I had re-clamped it down tight. As I was gunning it uphill on the I-5 on-ramp, I heard a pop and the car died. Got a screwdriver and tightened the heck out of it. Started right up and off I went! There's a LOT of pressure upon acceleration.
Hope this helps!
