I had a similar prob with my dash lights. The PO (or someone) while installing componant speakers in the dash had chowdered everything up inside, so..
After determining that the 'film' was all buggered up, I removed the headlight switch(be careful here so as not to break the locking tabs).
There is not a lot of room to pull the wires so go slow.
With my multi-tester, with the ing. on aux, and turning head-light switch on and off, I found the wire that was hot when in parking lights pos and or head-light pos.
Then I stripped a small section of the wire and soldered and shrink-tubed a 16/18 ga wire to the hot.
Bringing this back into the dash a bit, I then made soldered another wire to this(now two leads)
Take both wires when hot and test to known good holders and bulbs. when happy, care-fully soldered wires to holder contacts and plug back back in.
Instead on the reg 194incan, I used the 5'bulb' LED(green). Love it
Hope this makes sense
Cheers
Don
