Jeremy,
The '90 engine should fit just fine in place of the '91. When a piston rises too high in it's cylinder that's because that piston rod's big end bearing is shot or it's wrist pin bushing is shot. Either will allow the piston to continue traveling upward after the crank journal has reached it's TDC. Before you disassemble that block for repair you should expect it to need any of the following; 1)have the crank rod journals re-ground (because that one journal may be damaged) and install new oversized rod bearings 2) replace or repair the possibly damaged rod, 3) re-bush the small end(s) of one or more rods and maybe 4)replace a damaged piston. That's a sort of minimal list and you may get away with just one of those things being needed, but it's not wise to be so optimistic. You may also find that a rod bearing has disintegrated and tiny fragments have damaged the pump. You can certainly use used parts, rod, crank, piston, etc. to save money and good used engine parts are plentiful. Your cylinder bores, pistons and rings (other maybe than the one piston in question) will probably be fine. So get estimates on that machine work and base your decision as to whether you should rebuild or replace on that information. Cheers
