I recently replaced the speedometer/odometer/trip counter unit on my 86. It is not difficult nor time consuming (plan on a day's work if you haven't done this before) but does entail removing the instrument cluster and disconnecting the related wiring from behind the dash - specifics of which you can find on this board.
In my case the odometer but not the speedometer was dead - which probably meant a gear failure though I did not do a post mortem.
In your case it may be that the speedometer cable may need re-insertion or the cable itself is faulty. You can check this easily by removing the driver's side speaker assesmbly held in by two torx screws and feeling around back there (a good view is through the windshield looking in).
Your model may be different but both of mine had a metal clip on the backside of the cluster which holds the cable in place. These can easily snap so be careful.
Here's the kicker. I took the speedometer from my 84 (which experienced engine failure from terminal and serious piston slap, probably related to an overheat in its earlier life). The mileage on the 84 odometer sitting on my shelf some 8 years was within 1000 kms of what was on my 86 when it failed this past summer.
