Mechanical:
Advantages: faster response, usually come in 270 degree sweep (means more needle deflection for a given change)
disadvantages: more difficult installation, hot oil in the cabin...
Electric:
advantages: very easy installation (I used spare conductor spots in the big connectors from the fusebox), no oil in the cabin
Disadvantages: supposed slower response, most are only 90-degree sweep (but there are 270-degree sweep versions), can be hard to locate a sender that will replace the OP light switch, AND clear the oil cooler lines...
I wish I could recall the company I saw a while back selling the really nice electric gauges with the 270 degree sweep.
