Died, with a twist (long)

1988 900TConv automatic. Just got done doing a major tune job. Most normal wear item in the engine bay were replaced or checked for serviceability, but the problem that led to the tune up still persists. What's better, I can make the problem appear on cue!
A few weeks ago I was accelerating away from a stoplight and suddenly the car died, almost like someone turned off the key. I coasted and cranked the engine for over an hour, but no luck. I came back to the car the next morning and it started and drove home like nothing had occured. So today I had the car idling quite a bit while I set the base idle, bled the cooling system, etc, and then took it for a decent test run. I came home, turned it off for about 10 minutes and tried to start, but no luck. It cranks over and over, but no start. Just for laughs, I let it sit for several hours, and sure enough, it started right up. Why?!?!?!?
The twist: I installed a simple push-start button next to the ignition switch to save it from daily wear, and I noticed that push-start will NOT activate the starter when the car refuses to start. The ignition switch DOES turn the engine over, but the push button is innoperable. Is this indicative of voltage being cut from the fuel pump system near the ignition switch? ?
The push-button fiasco leads me to believe that it could be an ignition switch or fuel pump signal issue. What about the Hall heating up?
Any ideas?
