I'd lost AM reception in my '93 900S ArkanSaab altogether and FM was spotty, so I dug into it this weekend. One curious finding was that I could get crystal clear reception by touching any metal part of my trouble light (TL) to the surface mounting threads of the mast; a 16 ga threaded copper wire between threads and TL achieved same, but had no effect when placed in contact with grounding terminal beneath rear hatch. Finally, multimeter with probes on threads and TL registers 2.4V DC (and affords great reception).
I'll buy a beer to someone who can explain to me what's going on with current and reception, but here's the real question of this post: I harvested a replacement antenna assembly from another '93 900 (PhillieSaab). Both assemblies have a drain tube at the base of the motor. On the ArkanSaab, removal of the antenna assembly and tube was easy, it just pulled right out. On the PhillieSaab, I had to push the tube off of the barbed fitting on antenna motor base. The other end of the tube dives deep into the bowels of the back end, connecting, I suppose, to a dedicated drain spigot that I cannot see or reach.
So I installed the replacement antenna into the ArkanSaab and reception is now good (although marginally better when jumpered to the TL!) and I routed the drain tube... down, it probably discharges (if it discharges at all) somewhere beneath the rear hatch.
Am I courting disaster here? Will I sometime have a trunk full of water or a rusted-out rear quarterpanel? Where does the tube go?!!
