I've had some similar symptoms that you're describing, though not because of a collision.

The rubber washer/grommet on my 5-speed was very soft/decrepit when I bought the car, making the shift to fifth sometimes difficult. Finally at one point last year, the washer split and fell apart. I couldn't get the car into fifth or reverse and I thought something was terrible wrong. Since I had my center console extracted for unrelated reasons, I experimented with a thin screwdriver and was able to guide the shift link while shifting into fifth and reverse. It was a hacky and kludgey solution, but I could drive around like this for a couple of months.

I had to take the shifter housing apart and concoct a replacement bushing out of some vinyl hosing, but once installed, my car is back to normal shifting into fifth. That shift linkage alignment is critical for all five gears and reverse.

If your housing was loose before the collision, it certainly could have shifted out of alignment after the hit and produce the circumstance that's giving you difficult/impossible shifting. I wouldn't expect good shifting if your housing was loose like that in the first place.

I doubt you're doing any damage (assuming you're not grinding gears). You can drive on it, just get the re-alignment and tightening of that housing down on your list with your mechanic.
