Clutch/transmission question. kind of long. Posted by nicknick [Email] ![]() ![]() |
88 spg. 125,000. unknown (assumed rough) history.
new to me 4 months ago.
i changed the transmission fluid early on as there was a whine in reverse, 1, 2, 3. i figured the trans was toast, but i have one ready to go anyway.
I used 85-90 from napa and an additive for whining bearings (can't remember the name). Regular trannie oil as it smelled like reg trannie oil in there, not engine oil.
there was alot of 'paste' in the trans filter (it is a 'box without a drain plug-later?) so some of you will probably know which bearing or trannie part was going there-i don't!
trannie was good afterwards- quieter than before, and shifted good except cold (10f)-2nd.
clutch started to slip in 5th under decent boost (no numbers), so i put in a SD clutch. this is one of the ones that has 6? 'pucks' on the center plate.
clutch worked great, and the feeling was good.
all was good in the world for a couple of months. babied the trannie, only boosting hard in 4th and 5th.
started alot of city driving in the last month.
i started getting a vibration upon take-off after i had been driving for 10 minutes or so.
it was only when starting to actually move, not while stationary.
i thought clutch, as in when you get oil contamination.
however, i now am a little confused as to what i may have.
One week later;
The transmission completely blew while boosting hard in 3rd, crossing a 'rumble strip' on the freeway. it is 100%toast, after shifting into each gear to confirm how bad it was. some gears were grumbling and rattling with a little drive until a big 'clunk', others nothing (especially third). then, the shifter would only move from neutral to 3rd and back, with no 'drive' in either position, and a neutral that, when i was towed home, would only be quiet when i put in the clutch?
So, the question is, do i need to have Gary at SD look at the new clutch, or can i feel safe that ALL those issues were the trannie? I really don't want to bother them with testing/replacing a perfectly good clutch.
Any thoughts? TIA
