the bottom end of an engine is an interesting experience - as with anything, its never as easy as 'put pistons in, connect to crankshaft, away you go'. there's little tricks and techniques as with all jobs. there is more to a bottom end job than you think, and i think with a tranny rebuild, you are talking about 20 times the complexity as an engine.

from what i've been told by my very experienced mechanic, you would want to rebuild the 'right' tranny, ie an 89+ version so that you can install the updated pinion bearings. if u are focusing on the older trannies due to good parts availability, etc, then fine but you are going to eventually wind up with pinion problems, so why not try and take that factor out early?

when u tear down a tranny you will have to be able to identify which parts are worn and which are not. if you cant tell the difference, then you are wasting your time. further, there were tranny iterations along the line and parts from one transmission may not fit into another one.

finally, the one area critical is the pinion pre-load and from what i gather that's not an easy aspect either and if done incorrectly can skunk all your efforts.

i have always wanted to take a tranny apart and see the guts myself, and then perhaps by researching alot, i might understand what is critical in reassembling one, but i've only gotten as far as an engine job and that took me over a year not including the wait i had just to get the machining done! Luckily i had a friend who built engines for a living, who came over and helped me reassemble the bottom end.
