Help! trying to put engine onto auto transmission

I'm trying to put an engine onto an auto transmission. The engine (from a 1989 900S) is hanging on the engine hoist over the auto transmission (from a 1991 900S). I got the engine as level as I can but there is not enough clearance to fit the flywheel past the torque converter and edge of the oil pan.
As I drop the engine down the teeth of the flywheel come down onto the oil pan flange.
Does anyone please have any pointers? I have been working on this project for four months, and this is the first time I've been ready to throw in the towel.
One other piece of info. I stood the transmission up on its end to rinse out the oil pan with mineral spirits and compressed air. While I was doing this the torque converter dropped down about four inches with a loud clang (oops). Only after doing this (of course) did I notice that Bentley suggests keeping the torque converter in place with a special tool or you risk damaging the oil seal. Is it likely that I did damaged the seal? Do I need to take apart the torque converter housing and see what's up? Man, I thought I was nearly done. Oh well.
Thanks if anyone can offer any help.
Jeremy
