jeremy,
Uh oh! Probably the reason you can't get the engine to fit is that the torque converter isn't engaged with the pump gear. You have to hold the T.C. out a bit and rotate it until the two ears on it's snout engage the two slots in the drive gear and then push it fully home. Then the engine and flex plate should fit easily, in fact you'll have to pull the T.C. out a little when you bolt it to the flex plate. Unfortunately you should not trust the oil seal at this point. When the T.C. fell out it's ears probably nicked the seal lips and if you build it all up and start the engine and ATF spews all over the place you'll have way more work to do than if you deal with it now. It would be wise to inspect the T.C. ears also. They are surprisingly frail and may have been damaged when the T.C. was dropped out. Those ears were even known to sometimes break off in normal use causing a "No drive" condition. We used a special steel plate to support the T.C. whenever it was unbolted from the flex plate. Also, if you are fitting an engine that used to have a manual transaxle (5 speed) under it keep in mind that different engine oil pick-up tubes are used depending on which transaxle, manual or automatic, is used and the throttle plate on the throttle body is different to allow for connection of the throttle pressure cable.
