T37s don't fail early Posted by CMyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Saab auto trans. Band adjustments/CMyles, Saabnutt, Sat, 15 Mar 2008 19:03:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Sabbnut,
Since you mentioned it I just thought I'd make a comment here (not directed at you): The T37 transaxles DON'T fail early. It dismays me to constantly read the bashing of the T37 (not that you are, but it comes up a lot). They tend to run about 150,000 miles before it is rebuild time and sometimes (like yours) quite a bit farther. That aint bad for a basically reliable, old fashioned 3 speed automatic. Most of the T37's contemporaries were lucky to see 100,000!
When they were fresh and properly set-up they were quiet, smooth and reliable and the gas mileage was respectable. The high range wasn't really ideal for a car that will do 125 MPH but I guess the message was, "If you want to haul ass, drive a five speed". I think that many of the complaints about noise and bad mileage can be chalked up to people's impressions of worn out or badly installed units and those folks would be pleasantly surprised by the performance of a (properly) freshly rebuilt T37. Lame installation of a good unit can lead to noise, poor performance and premature failure if the throttle pressure and shift cable adjustments are overlooked or improperly done or the cooling system isn't flushed clean.
Maybe the biggest tragedy concerning the T37 was that Borg-Warner agreed to make (nearly) all the parts "Captive items" so that they had to be purchased through Saab. That made proper rebuilding an unnecessarily costly undertaking which was compounded by the costly labor of removing and replacing a transaxle that dwells under the engine. Maybe the biggest problem with the classic 900 was that Saab built a car and engine that would outlast any transmission (of the day), including the 5 speed, by "yet to be determined" thousands of miles. My Sunday rant, take that!
ps: All my cars have 5 speeds (now) ;-)
