If they are a little weak under great strain, as they seem, it might be because of the Saab 99-C900 setup, with the tranny innards needing to fit alongside a usable oil pan with swing room for the crank, not hanging down so far as to cause ground clearance issues, and needing to be centered with a differential at good axle height, be in line with differential at near to centerline of the car, and end before bumping into the differential.
I think, to make a tougher tranny they might have ended up having to redesign the whole car. Can't have the motor's mass too high off the ground, also can't move motor up without raising the hood, can't do that without redesigning the whole body; Or, to get a lower engine center of mass, can't change the angle of the block without redesigning the whole engine, etc....
