They do not break "all the time" - you've got 180k on yours, which in the grand scheme of things is pretty respectable for a transmission. Some go sooner, some go later, but generally speaking the transmissions are pretty average in the world of FWD automobiledom... they just happen to be a weak point on the car. When you have a motor that lasts an abnormally long 300k, a transmission that only manages 150k seems like a problem.
All that said, keep in mind the basic transmission design dates back to 80hp 1.7l motors in 1969. They were never originally designed to handle the 185hp and 205 lb ft of torque the last generation cars were putting out; the fact that they could even reliably handle double their original intention is pretty amazing.
