on that trannie deal, shame it didn't work out. I guess the biggest thing is always going to be the trannie-mine just blew completely, fwiw.so, more than just popping out of reverse is a whine in either 5th on the road at higher speeds, or the other whine is R, 1,2&3, not 4th and 5th-thats what mine had for not too many miles before it went. of course rust, like you mention is a biggy, seats, dash, headliner (if you give in and go for a hatch-not the worst thing in the world, especially in Brooklyn!), general service items like oil seals, gaskets (head gasket, especially)...
oh, the list goes on...
but really, like any car, WHY ARE THEY SELLING IT? In all my years of buying and selling cars in general, that is the single biggest question that needs to be asked, and answered. I remember someone wiser than me (not difficult!) once saying 'buying a used car is buying someone elses problems'. THIS IS ALMOST ALWAYS TRUE!
none of this 'i bought a new car so i need it gone' BS.
Get to the root of that question and you will find your baby.
good luck, and don't buy anything that has lived in NY. I was told once by a long time New yorker that a car bought in NJ with twice the miles as a car in NY is worth the same-not explaining that very well, but i hope you get the point. any saab 5 speed that has lived in the city is going to have a trashed trannie, whichever way you cut it. the first 5 speed saab i bought was from Rode Island, and it held up well.
Don't trust anyone-sorry, call me a cynic, but i have seen to many scamming B'stards selling junkers to say anything else...
Ask Chaz if wouldn't mind helping look at the next 'hopeful'-he REALLY knows his stuff, and lives in park slope.
that's all i got, as they say.
