So we had to do this on a 1990 900T hatch, and after doing alot of research, and not understanding some of it...
this is what we did and it seemed to work...
and much of this is from the pros that do it, they just were a little reluctant to give it up...
get a bottle of windex, a black plastic trash bag, a hobby knife or razor blade, cloth towels (the red ones are ok but the white bulk back from costco are better - you will most likely be trashing them after, you want ones that have some texture to them, not old undershirts, and NOT old sheets, although those are ok to use at the last phases), one beer, one newspaper, a chair, a radio, and waterless hand cleaner. I like the GOOP product, ***NOT*** the kind with grit, smooth stuff ***only*** AND I believe the non citrus stuff works better, the stuff that has a petroleum odor to it. The stuff that was main stream before the citrus stuff got big. you can still find it out there. a Pint sized plastic container works well.
1. you need to do this on a day with bright sunlight, no sunlight? Temperature not really an issue, 45 degrees or more is good, don't bother.
2. park car such that the sweep of the sun will stay aligned with the car, account for anything that will cast a shadow and park in a better spot.
3. spray the windex on the OUTSIDE of the window, get it coated.
4. place the black trash bag on the window, cut to fit, you can cut the bag open to make a single layer, that works best, you are trimming to fit the OUTSIDE of the window, spray windex as needed to keep it wet and hold the plastic. if windy a helper is better.
5. after you are finished with the trim and affix, spray again to keep it wet and in place.
6. open chair, drink beer, and read newspaper, keep checking the window to keep it wet and plastic in place. this is very important. really.
7. after about 45-60 minutes, beer drunk and paper read... you will note that the glass has been steaming and is very hot, this is correct. Go INSIDE car with goop and towels, the glue will be very gummy, put generous amounts of goop on the towel and apply similar to doing wax on paint, work it in, keep at it, add goop as needed, and wipe to remove... finish an area and move to a new one.
8. after having done the entire area, go over it one more time but quickly, to make sure it's all gone.
9. remove the plastic, do windex on the inside to remove any residue goop stuff, there really should not be very much if you used the towels well.
10. clean up and go look for another beer...
we were told black plastic trash bag and windex, and spray outside of window... you should have seen us spray window and try to buff with the plastic bag.... after about 15 minutes we knew there were important steps intentionally left out!
