hi-mileage auto running well - yank it anyway?(long) Posted by Saabu [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Bought a 91 900NA 205,000k km 3 door auto still in good shape; I have the same car (and color) in a 5 speed so really just bought this one as a parts car.
Between the time the PO bought the car and sold it to me, the tranny stopped upshifting and it needed a new headlight and radio so i got it for a pretty good price.
When i got it home, some research in the archives suggested i should mat the gas in order to get the tranny to upshift, which it did. The car is very spunky, i must say - a lot more low-end acceleration than both my 5 speed NA and my 87 SPG (which has its own problems...).
The tranny fluid looks pretty thick but is unburned. i gather that a complete tranny fluid service and possibly a kickdown cable adjustment and governor clean-out may solve the tranny problem. I'm capable of those procedures myself.
However, in doing the research in the archives, it seems that based on the mileage, this tranny may be living on borrowed time anyway...
So my two questions are: am i wasting my time on this tranny and should just get on with the task of doing a 5 speed conversion or stripping the car?
Second, the Townsend kickdown cable adjustment write-up seems backwards (but i know that can't be). my kickdown cable is pretty much right at the crimp, with no more adjustment left at the throttle to make the cable tighter. Do these cables stretch, or what causes them to be in need of replacement?
Thanks in advance,
Wayne in Calgary
