Suggest you Do Not fool with the kick down cable... It is V sensitive and impacts a lot of the box, not just where kickdown occurs.
It requires a pressure gauge (and the real Manual) to properly set.
You WILL do bad things if you DIY it Blind.
Also a Trans fluid Flush (pressure) at a shop that has a reputation for decent work (not Amaco :-) to prevent accidental/intentional damages.
Fluid MUST look like cranberry juice, at anytime it's looked at.. period.
Likely the upshift issue will disapear with a flush refill.
In my experiences the 5 speeds are no 'bowl of cherries' either giving every bit as much grief as any B&W Autobox... I would not bother swapping.
Or more charitably wait 'untill the Auto dies before commiting yerself to a huge amount of work on a $1000 (when finished) car.
