I completely remove both of the axles by removinr both of the bolts to the lower ball joint and the outside bolt on the top ball joint to get the clearance to pull the axles. Then I replace the ball joints and put the bolts back in, and tighten but not torque the nuts. Once the wheels are back on, I very slightly jack the front end up on both side (mainly to get clearance to roll my engine hoist back under the car, otherwise the suspension get s in the way.
This only takes about 20 minutes to do and gives a nice low extremely stable posture for the car as the engine comes out. Then with the wheels on and with no weight from the engine, the car can be rolled out of the garage for a good pressure washing of the engine compartment. Which, BTW, is really filthy after 18 years of oily filth building up.
