power plant leaks Posted by CMyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: well, you'll be hard pushed to find many here that, nicknick ![]() |
Kim,
As you may know there are 3 fluids related to the power plant; engine oil (which has a dipstick for checking), automatic transmission fluid (which also has a dipstick) and differential oil which does not have a dipstick. A leaking transmission pan gasket will leak ATF (which is red) and can be fixed by a good Saab mechanic in an hour or less, plus whatever he charges for the gasket (maybe $10-$30) and some ATF. Replacing the axle seal, which will leak differential oil, should take the same Saab mechanic about an hour and add the cost of the seal (maybe $15) an o'ring ($3) and some differential oil.
If these are very small leaks of ATF or engine oil you can accommodate them for quite a while by just checking the dipsticks frequently and topping up as needed. To check and fill the differential you have to unscrew a plug in the side of the transaxle and see that the oil level is up to the hole for that plug. It's a little tedious especially with the car on the ground but if the car is driven without enough differential oil that can total the transaxle and then you're looking at $2-3000 for a fresh one! So if nothin else concentrate on being sure that you have the differential filled and fix that axle seal leak if it's really spewing. Keep in mind that the difference between having a Saab 900 experienced mechanic and a "generic" auto mechanic do these kind of repairs can be crucial. There are often critical details that only the Saab guys are tuned in to. good luck
