Changed tranny fluid and lost reverse? (long) Posted by NCSaab [Email] ![]() ![]() |
’92 900TC, 80K miles, 5 speed
I’ve owned it for about a year (6K miles). I replaced the master cylinder in Fall ’07 and believe it has its original clutch and transmission.
Problems:
1) notchy shifting (especially when cold) into first, second and reverse
2) gearshift movement when I let off accelerator
I decided to drain the tranny fluid this weekend to possibly help with problem #1. This MY does not have a tranny drain plug, so I siphoned most of the fluid out of the dipstick hole with a turkey baster and then opened up the rear differential to drain the rest of the fluid. I checked the magnet and screen and removed a small amount of metal shavings, but no major bits. Used a new gasket to seal the rear cover and then filled ‘er up with MTL.
Got in the car and with engine off, I pushed in the clutch, took the car out of third gear (I read it was easier to access some of the bolts with tranny in 3rd) and into neutral. Easily went into 1, 2 & 3, but had trouble going into 4th. Finally found it and then went into 5th. Went back to neutral, then 1st and then tried reverse – no luck.
Wondering what I screwed up… Possibilities I came up with:
1) While siphoning out the dipstick hole, could the tip of the baster knocked something loose? Also refilled through this hole via a funnel.
2) While removing the two upper right bolts on the rear cover, I touched what I believe is the shift rod boot. Did moving the boot affect reverse?
3) While under the car, I touched the shift coupler, but did not inspect it closely (not sure what to look for at the time).
Would appreciate any advice on where to start first!
Thanks,
Robb
