pull up the picture of the automatic flex plate on this site
http://www.saabnet.com/sites/900conversion/drivep.html
note that the center of the plate is where the SEVEN bolts go into the crank, just like the pressure plate for the stick. the heads of these bolts won't allow the bit on the torque converter to slip past. ALSO I believe the bolts between the auto and stick may be different lengths (ergo depths) and *might* rub... make sure...
in this picture the bolt hole at about the 6 o'clock position is the one not used, note no silver ring around the whole from the bolt shoulder. this is the opening in the castle of bolt heads that the torque converter head has to slip past. note the timing plates at 1 o'clock and 7 o'clock on the flex plates, try to move the engine around using a socket on the crank pully to align these and see if you can slip through. there is a procedure in the bentley about this (or was it my shop manuals? forgot because it was painful...) to do this, but I think we used the wrong timing plate to align and it didn't work... we eventually brute forced it around to find the other plate...
once you get it aligned it falls apart like it was never an issue...
