etc, coming out. you do obviously have to pull the plastic from shifter back, the shifter comes out with 3 torx screws.
the 'special tool' can be made by cutting a small socket so it has 3 prongs. however, i just pulled this aluminum assembly with switch by just using some long nose pliars and grabbing one of the 3 prongs on the nut, squeeze hard and prey! all 3 came loose this way. at that point, you will notice how the bolts fall out under this hole mess, and that is going to be your single biggest problem. be sure to have one of those magnetic tools handy for this job-you have been warned!
ok, so shifter is off, 3 nuts are out, the bolts have fallen through (push them through if they haven't fallen out), pull the wires off ign (take a picture first!), pull wires off reverse sensor on side.
pull the entire unit back and up a little to dislodge it. turn it sideways so it is on it's side, with the bottom now facing the pass side. you will see 2 torx screws holding the plastic shifter base on. remove those. now you can pull the whole unit out, leaving the shifter linkage in the car. if you can't get the unit back far enough to turn it, you need to disconnect the coupling where it goes in trannie. try it first.
now, going back in is more fun (!).
the worst part about putting it back in is dealing with those bolts that fell out. the rear (short) one is easy, but the front ones are near impossible.that is when you realise that you maybe should have removed the entire interior. i decided to just drop the bolts in from the top, secure the rear one as designed, and live with a tiny amount of movement in the shifter. it is tiny, but there. you could put regular nuts and bolts in the front instead, but it is up to you as to how you get them in place.
make no mistake, this job is not fun.
yes, saabs are a real pain to fix, sometimes (i'm taking a break from changing out a starter right now!), but thats why we love them, right?
good luck...
