i would have talked you through the failing of my starter...
a couple of times before i swapped the trannie it failed to kick, but i didn't think anything of it (there's me not thinking again...)
of course, no sooner had i put the trannie in, it got worse-quickly!
would sit there turning the key 10 times, then it would start. or, hold the key for a few seconds sometimes worked.
put a test light on the signal wire to starter-lit every time (dvm 12v also).
jumped with a screwdriver-worked every time.
so this morning a put a relay next to solenoid to give a better current to starter-worked better right away!
10 starts later, it stopped disengaging from flywheel! first it work stay engaged for 3-4 seconds, then got to the point where it wouldn't disengage at all-finally did, but then wouldn't work at all...
that was all within 3 days.
use a long extension with a swivle head for the 12mm rear starter mounts.
use screwdriver to lever plastic clutch cover back, so you can slip 14mm wrench on those bolts, 17mm thin walled socket for the nuts-pb blaster them first so you only have to turn them 1/2 turn with wrench and spin them off with fingers. magnetic tool time (again!).
let us know how you make out.
