2 days after the axle job I tackle one that was a lot easier.
Put Mobil 1 10W30 in (4 qts.) and it seemed to come only up to the midway point btwn MIN & MAX on the dipstick. Manual says 4qts but it seems to need a little more. Oil filter was a bit of trouble to get off, and when i was putting on the new one noticed that the tread mount had come half way out of the housing that holds the filter. I tightened it back in by hand as hard as i could, then put on the filter. I used some old oil on the gasket (as i learned a long long time ago). Maybe it was so hard to get off cuz someone forgot that part.
Step 2 was Redline MTL. I thought the drain plug was a 1/2in. sq. drive but quickly learned that it was a hex that i didn't have. So out came the ViceGrips. :) Didn't come off by hand so i put a 4ft pipe (used 2 days earlier on the axle job) on the end of the ViceGrip and gave her a good push. Came loose. God bless leverage.
Drain plug had a lot of metal fragments on it. Not sure if the tranny fluid had ever been changed but it was dirty and lots of metal on that plug.
The fill plug was seized on, so after muckin with it for 10 mins from above with a ratchet, i went for the underneath approach. Still nothing. So out came the 19mm ratcheting wrench (same one that got stuck under the coil spring on sat.) Nothing budged so i resorted to force and hit the end of the wrench with a couple good whacks from a mini-sledge. POW! Came loose :)
The manual called for 3qts and that is what she got.
All plugs seemed to be holding after i started it up. Will look again tomorrow on the ground for signs of otherwise.
Couple things to note:
- When i started the car it ran terrible, looked under the hood and heard a loud hiss. Sure nuf i broke one of the nylon vacuum nipple. :( Nothing Krazy-Glue didn't fix but now i need to order some of them. Any sugg. on best place/price?
- On the drive home after the job the car seemed to shift better, and the engine seemed quieter. Am i just making that crap up or would the Syn in both places have added to these feelings of improvement?
PS: I was gonna do the fuel filter but i was sketched out by the idea of being under the car with it on jack stands. Any sugg on how to make me feel more comfortable getting under the car that far? multiple sets of jack stands, in case one fails? I don't wanna take it to a mech to do this job cuz it is ez but i am freaked a bit. I guess pulling the rear wheels up on ramps would work too, or a really high curb :)
thx, neil
