except of course for the roof. as justin rightly says, they all need to be replaced someday. the one i have for sale right now (this is NOT an ad!) had the roof replaced a couple of years back, and was done professionally with the right top. this is important, and something you should keep near the top of the list in your search. you want it to just look like a new car-if that isn't being too vague!. lift up the sides of the back window, at the fabric underneath. that is usually left alone on cheaper roof replacements, but you really want one that has had the entire roof redone. the mechanisms for these 'verts are super easy to work on, and very reliable, plus they do have a bypass valve for manual emergancies! nothing like the newer 'saabs' that need $$$ at a dealer for roof mech repairs.

if the car feels tight, abs works good (do the pedal pump test), leather is nice, and generally rust free (look just rearwards from the battery for rust-big problem) then you are probably good.

justin has it on the transmission, so, if a manual, check to see if it pops out of reverse (back-up hard), and also if it pops out of 2nd coming off the gas or while on the gas in any gears. listen carefully for transmission whines-all are bad news on these cars. also listen when you (in neutral, engine running)depress and release the clutch. what you don't want to hear is the mechanics of the transmission rolling when you release.

also look for spliced wiring, nice hoses, fluid leaks of any sort, nice belts, etc.

one point of interest is that the wheel bearings on these cars almost never fail. unlike ford focus' which seem to last like 50k! gives a good idea of how well built these are...

good luck, bad time to buy, but they are still underpriced right now(IMHO), so grab a good one!

this one is not for sale! (but has 175,000 on it!)
