It sounds like any serious power drain is overtaxing the system. A voltmeter (about $10 from any auto parts store, fairly easy to install temporarily) will illustrate this. If you car is in the 125k+ range and alternator has never been replaced, it might be fine BUT the two brushes may be quite worn, based on mileage, so it will not be able to adaquately charge any more. A new brush/voltage regulator pack (about $35 or so I think, common to VW also being a Bosch alternator) is easy to install. It may even be possible to do it (after disconnecting the battery) with the alternator in the car. You will be especially motivated to try this if the AC compressor is in the way. I remove most of mine, being in a northern state, for this very reason. But with a new brush pack, you may possibly be good for another 100k! If not, check grounds also, and also clean up the battery cables where they attach to the battery. EVEN if they look good!
Good luck!
