don't just check the connections, also check the wires are continuous. I had a wire that looked ok, but on closer look, the copper inside was broken, even though the insulation was still whole. Use a meter and be sure all your connections are complete. A common problem is the ground wire from the alternator to the frame.
Check all grounds - these wires are getting old and have been riding around in a hot engine compartment!
Look at the alternator brushes too, since they wear and are easy to check.
