sometimes the rings get fried when that happens. not often, depends on how badly overheated. i just pulled an engine last week because same thing happened, and rings were a little bad, so bad compression, but no smoke. i did the same as you, took the chance, engine ran kind of ok, but a little rough. again, no smoke, so i drove it for a year.
constant smoke is classic ring failure. sorry.
maybe do a compression check to conclude.
