if the head was badly warped, it should have been Posted by nicknick [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: OK, well that may explain alot. the problem is that, 89TurboVerty, Mon, 5 May 2008 05:40:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
replaced. yes, if it smells like antifreeze, then i guess it is antifreeze!. is coolant going down/getting pressurized abnormally?
head could be cracked, so could the block, head may still not be flat enough to seal properly.
i guess the machinist should have been diligent and pressure checked, examined for visable cracks, but in my experience they only do this stuff if you ask them to. hand them a head to be flattened, they will flatten the head, and nothing else.
the mechanic should have explained the possiblities to you more thoroughly (assuming he didn't), as a replacement engine is not that expensive, and any regular indy can do the work pretty quick.
i think i would have done what i did before, which is to get another head, and hope the block is ok. that didn't work out for me, ended up doing the block anyway.
hit and miss. try and save a few $$$, end up spending more$$$ than you would have originally.
i would not drive it anymore. the cat won't like it, and you will probably blow a hose or expansion tank or rad, which will cause you to overheat again.
heck, right now i would consider draining coolant, flush with water, then alumnaseal or bars leak to try and seal up the 'crack'. you've got nothing to lose, right?
go for it, follow instructions to the letter. i would also pull the plugs to see which one is getting steamcleaned, then leave that plug out while trying the bars leak process-that way you don't risk over pressuring the cooling system while trying to plug it. just a thought.
best of luck (really!).
