Back in 2005, I decided to change the positive cable on my '88 900. On the passenger's side of the car, the positive cable goes through a rubber-insulated tie-down clamp. I'd seen some cracking there and plenty of green corrosion at the terminal-end of the cable at the battery. When I took the cable off, the area underneath that tie-down clamp had nearly no insulation left around it with heavy corrosion.
Classify this under "Thank goodness it's insulated."
Epilogue: last month, after cleaning up the positive terminal on the passenger's side inner fender, I taped the cover in place above it since the plastic had gone brittle and cracked long ago. That one needs to remain covered in a collision or especially a rollover, or the positive terminals can contact the carbody. Definitely pay some attention to that one.
Thanks for the heads-up on the starter terminal.
