Warning: Crumbling battery cable insulation.

I have ignored and taped over a patch at the starter end of the battery positive cable on my '89 where the insulating jacket has been crumbling away. The wire inside was clean and bright and not at all corroded and nothing is nearby or pressing on it there.
But yesterday I spotted a more sinister crack, a broad one, underneath the spring-steel clip that holds the cable up snug against the driver side of the clutch cover. Still too big a gap to jump, but only about 1/8" I figure, between a massive source of 12 volts positive and a steel clip that via its attaching bolt into the block is grounded straight to the negative.
I just took the clip right off for now. The cable is pretty well supported by the tubing-wrapped section that's clipped to the front of the tranny case and by its end at the starter, and it's stiff enough from age that it can't sag or move around. I'll tape it up today.
Just to let others know - - this is the kind of flaw, if it crumbled a bit more, that can burn a car up.
