I think the reason the Saab 900 auto tranny was the model used, and no overdrive, is possibly that everything needed to fit in the same format as the manual tranny, alongside the swing of the crank with room enough for an oil sump and ending at the differential case, both starting point at front and ending point in rear and lowest limit of the case already decided on by the motor-manual tranny-car design.
