I think the reason the 900 didn't have the o/d automatic had a lot to do with cost and the ending of the run of the 900. The 9000 had come out with the o/d and the 900 was about to end production as it had been around for quite a few years. Why spend money on engineering?
The BW unit had been around since the '50s I believe in one form or another. That doesn't bother me as the manuals have been around in basically the same form for a lot longer than that.
I'd get 24-28 mpg with my automatics, depending on how it's driven. The manuals got 30 or a bit better.
I'm not saying one is better than the other, because both types of transmissions have issues. They have different characteristics entirely and will give you different "feels". Both transmissions, IF PROPERLY MAINTAINED AND PROPERLY DRIVEN, will last a long time. Get a car that you want...don't get an automatic and wish it were a manual or vise-versa.
